Protests over shifting of tax barrier

KARNAL: Shifting of the toll tax plaza on National Highway-1 from Manak Majra to Gharaunda on December 1 sparked protests with locals taking to the road on Tuesday to vent their ire against the move.
The shift came after a court decision allowed to move the toll plaza to Gharaunda.
Gharaunda MLA Harvinder Kalayan of ruling BJP said he had already taken up the matter with the construction company and ensured that concessional passes were issued to local residents.
He said generally a toll plaza was erected on the border between two districts, but in this case it had been set up in a block causing unrest among locals.
Locals rued that they would now have to pay money for passes, which was completely unacceptable. They demanded that the government should make arrangements for alternate routes so that the locals could travel without any hassle.
